Ledger Live is the official app developed by Ledger, the maker of popular hardware wallets like the Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, and Nano X. It allows you to:
Manage multiple cryptocurrencies
View balances and portfolio data
Send and receive crypto
Buy, sell, and stake assets (through integrated services)
Hardware Wallet Integration
Ledger Live is designed to work only with Ledger hardware wallets, which store your private keys offline (cold storage). This is much safer than hot wallets.
Secure Transaction Signing
Even if your computer is infected with malware, a Ledger device won't sign a transaction unless you physically approve it on the device.
PIN Protection & Recovery Phrase
Access to the wallet requires a PIN, and the 24-word recovery phrase is your only backup. Ledger does not store your keys.
Open Source Core Components
Most of Ledger's core wallet code is open source, allowing independent audits (but not all parts of Ledger Live are open).
Ongoing Updates and Support
Ledger regularly pushes firmware and software updates to patch vulnerabilities and improve support.
Seed Phrase Security is Your Responsibility
If you lose your recovery phrase or someone else gains access to it, they can take all your funds. Ledger cannot recover it.
Phishing Attacks
Many Ledger users have been targeted via fake emails, fake Ledger Live apps, and malicious Chrome extensions. Always verify you’re downloading from https://www.ledger.com.
Ledger Recover Controversy (2023)
Ledger introduced an optional seed phrase backup service (“Ledger Recover”), which raised privacy and security concerns. Though optional, it sparked distrust in the community. Ledger has since improved transparency, but some users remain skeptical.
Closed Source Parts
Not all components of Ledger Live are open source, meaning there’s a level of trust required for parts of the software.
Ledger Live Plugin Risks
Ledger Live now supports third-party apps (DeFi, NFTs). These plugins can present additional attack surfaces—use them cautiously.
Only Download Ledger Live from the official site:

Enable password and biometric protection for the app.
Never share your 24-word recovery phrase – Ledger will never ask for it.
Write your seed offline, store it in a fireproof safe or use metal backups.
Beware of fake Ledger support – scammers impersonate Ledger employees.
Verify all transactions on your device screen before confirming.
Use air-gapped devices (e.g., Passport, Coldcard)
Consider multi-sig setups (with services like Casa or Unchained)
Explore open-source wallets like Sparrow or Electrum (if advanced)
